Poverty is not always what you think it is.

For the rest of us, the image says it all. There is so much more to poverty. You can be a wealthy person and be poor in spirit. Wealth has been at least partially responsible for some people's institutionalization.

“Yes, but that will work for the ones who don’t intend to stay poor, thus using the lessons poverty taught them to beat it.”
“Yeah,” she said in deep thought. “I find it amazing that with all of what your people face and must live with, they are still stronger in body, mind, and soul.”
“Damn,” Vanessa said with a broad smile. “You are aware of our strength.”
“We are amazed by your people’s resilience,” she confessed.
With a deep breath eyeing her change of words Vanessa went on, “Yes, life and poverty strengthen us. Food, money, title, privilege, and power strengthen your people. That’s why when your money is gone, so is you.”
She sighed then said, “I still don’t get it, with all of the laws set up to prevent progress, immigrants tend to do better than both blacks and some whites here.”
“My grandfather says, the first person you must know in your life, is yourself. The second is your surroundings and the people who live there. He said we must identify and remove the negative. Then find ways to change it, while strengthening our positives. The third is our world. Take the time to know your world. We learn that we are living in an unstable country. He said we can follow the instability to hell or learn from it and create our own heaven.”
“Now I see why your people managed to survive despite all of the obstacles you face daily. Don’t you ever wish you were white?”

Poverty and wealth have an interesting correlation. DR brings up a point of what might seem like poverty to the wealthy, people who have millions and billions of dollars are very different from what poverty means to other people. It is an interesting idea that even if someone is not “poor” by financial standards they can be poor in spiritual standards. What does teh poor spirituality mean for a person?
Poverty of the spirit is something we should truly fear—drifting through life without awareness, blindly following orders, and wasting our existence. Living without passion and wonder is a real tragedy. It’s time to wake up and start truly living.
