This week we continue with more character traits by DR Rawson that bring value and support into people’s lives. patience is a big one for me as a nurse and as a mother. Taking time, listening, not showing being in a hurry is essential when one takes care of other people. A simple gesture as following up and taking time with people I work with and my family and friends can make a great difference in their lives. I sure appreciate when some takes their time to listen to what I have to say.
I hope you enjoy our Monday series and in case you missed them, please look back the previous weeks where you can find amazing traits that bring value into our lives.
Everyone Has Examples. May I share?

Politeness
It had been a long day. My best friend, Mike Mass, and I had been up at the crack of dawn to feed roughly thirty-five dads and about fifty or so sons. This was our annual Father and Son campout on a Friday night, around Father’s Day every year.
I did the pancakes and Mike did the bacon and scrambled eggs. We were absolutely a Team.
This year, both oil and agriculture, the two commodities in our community, were very hard-pressed. No one was feeling excited or happy about being there
We finished a thankless day at around 3 pm just as everyone was packing to go home. Mike and I had just mentioned to each other the lack of politeness. We felt pretty unappreciated
Within a few minutes, a couple of young brothers approached us. The youngest boy, about seven, said, “Did you know my brother and me wait all year to be up here with our Dad and eat your food? You guys cook better than Mom.”
Mike and I were saying thank you, and kind of laughing inside to be polite, and his nine-year-old brother tapped me on the side and said, “My brother speaks the truth, but do you promise not to say anything to our Mom? She tries really hard.” We agreed, and we were humbled by a boy who thought that much of his Mother.
Perseverance and Patience
As a homeless boy and the oldest of four, it was my joy to find food and housing for our family of five. My Mother just couldn’t cope with all that had happened to us in such a short span of time.
On this day, I put on the best clothes I had. They weren’t much but they were clean, and so was I, right down to my fingernails. At nine and a half, I was big for my age at 5 foot 7 inches tall.
I started a block from the vacant and boarded-up house we we living in and walked all the way west down El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego down to the dock downtown. Down one side of the street and up the other. I stopped at every business to see if they would hire me. A few said they would part-time until they found out how old I was.
Two blocks from finishing, I decided to stop and get food from behind my favorite Italian restaurant. It had been a very long morning. I stepped into a sea of trash cans and began filling the bag that I had in my pocket with meats, pizza, and bread that I could use to feed my family.
The back door to the restaurant burst open, and out popped this little old man. He said, in his thick Italian accent, “Hey, what are ya doing? Put that down and get a job.” I politely explained my circumstances. He thought about it briefly and said, “Can you wash the dishes?” My answer was quick, “es Sir. He instantly responded, “You are hired, get in here.”
I patiently learned about perseverance and hope that day. Later I learned, “Never give up before the miracle happens.”
