This week we continue looking at character traits with DR Rawson. The 3 traits include Self-Awareness, Responsibility, and Respect. Each of these traits are essential for us to grow as a human being and provide great examples for the future generations. I am grateful for DR for sharing his wisdom with us and teaching us more about these traits.
Everyone Has Examples. May I share?

Self -Awareness
In my twenties, I was told that I would probably die in my early forties. We had just had our third child. I was in my third business, covering the western US and traveling every week. Clearly, I was not self-aware of what was happening to me emotionally and in turn my treatment of others. My wife, at that time, brought me up short.
She said, “Do you know how to spell tac?”.
I said, “Sure t-a-c-t.”
She said, ”This is how you actually spell it: P-i-s-s O-n Y-o-u”
Within a few short weeks, I made dramatic changes in the way I saw myself and how that reflected in my interactions with others.
Responsibility
My experience has shown me that fewer people take responsibility for their intended and unintended consequences than you might imagine. In my case, I was on a top-secret assignment working with aircraft going back and forth between a secret base and Da Nang Air Base in Vietnam when I fully realized that my actions and my team could have life or death consequences. It was at that point that I realized that I was responsible. I’m confident that at the ripe old age of nineteen, I became much older than my years.
Respect
My father and I sold chickens and rabbits to local butchers who came to the ranch early every Saturday morning. We usually had around 5,000 rabbits and several hundred chickens. I would feed them every morning before walking to school. At first, I hated that some of “my bunnies and chicks” went to someone else. I gave very little respect.
My father sat me down one day after school and said, “Do you see how people treat us, with respect for growing and maintaining these animals? They respect us, and we should respect them. Without them, you wouldn’t eat.” That was when I first learned how to give and receive respect.
Till next time…
Recap:
Self-awareness - Responsibility - Respect
It is so important to take a look and live by the values and "characters" we want to be. It is a great reminder to look inside and take a check how we are doing when it comes to our values that build our characters. Great series DR.
Your father was wise to talk to you about the way you felt and give you a different point of view.
